Rottnest Island holds a strange fascination for me. It has a long history and has been used for many purposes since settlement. My great grandfather was the lighthouse keeper for a while and my nan spent a couple of years there as a girl with him and her mother. She tells some amazing stories of life on Rottnest back when it was a prison for convicts and when Quokkas were on the menu. I think what makes Rottnest special is it isn’t over developed. Once you leave the main settlements you are on your own. I have had so many wonderful times throughout my life riding my bike around the island and exploring all the bays. It is amazing that you can be so close to a large city yet feel so removed from it. I love my times at Rotto.
