Gwalia

What a spot this is. It’s pretty spooky really, an abandoned town with everything left as it was. It’s like the humans just up and left. That is except for the grey nomads wondering around…nearly thought I saw a ghost a few times…until some oldie moved and I realised they were actually another visitor having a look.

Gwalia is a ghost town. It was a thriving mining town back in the day but when the mine closed down in 1963, this town went from 1200 people to 40 in three weeks. The buildings have been preserved, thanks to lots of work by volunteers. On the day I was there, the light was just perfect. Shafts coming through the windows, a coating of dust, loads of historical touches – all the elements for a ghostly shoot. I used my Leica handheld and my 14-24mm lens.

Love the texture and colour of these photos and the way the mood is enhanced.
