The second week of my Photo A Day Challenge has been a journey of rediscovery. Those of you following along on Instagram know it was a week marked by unpredictable weather and challenging light, but those very conditions have made the process even more rewarding.
Rain, clouds and less than perfect light have all conspired to test my patience and push my skills to the limit. But there’s a certain thrill in working with what nature gives you, in waiting for just the right moment when the light breaks through or the clouds part, revealing something extraordinary. The challenge has been tough, but it’s reminded me why I love photography—there’s beauty in the unexpected, in the fleeting moments that you can only capture if you’re willing to persevere.
One of the highlights of this week has been having these amazing locations all to myself. The unpredictable weather seems to have kept most people indoors, leaving the landscapes quiet and undisturbed. It’s a rare luxury to experience these places in such solitude, to hear nothing but the sound of waves crashing or watch the stars disappear as the sun rises. This solitude has allowed me to connect with the landscapes on a deeper level, seeing them with fresh eyes and appreciating the subtle changes that come with this time of year.
This week’s images reflect the diversity and beauty of the local area, from the rugged coastline to the tranquil waters and everything in between. There is the serenity of the early mornings, where soft light bathes the landscape, abstract compositions, where the texture of the land and rain-soaked windows create a juxtaposition of nature and man-made elements. These shots remind me that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places if you’re willing to look closely.
Then there is the dramatic coastline that I’ve come to know so well. Despite the familiar terrain, I’ve found new perspectives, angles and moments that have reignited my passion for these landscapes. The changing weather has added an element of drama to these scenes, with waves crashing against rocks and clouds rolling in, creating a dynamic backdrop that’s both challenging and exhilarating to capture.
I’m reminded of the importance of seeing the world around us with fresh eyes. Even the most familiar places hold new possibilities when we take the time to explore them fully. I’m excited to continue this journey, to face whatever challenges the weather and light may throw my way and to keep finding new ways to capture the beauty of the South West.
